The Town of Magrath, Public Works has recently found a surprising number of items being flushed down the sewer main that shouldn’t be there—especially "flushable wipes." Despite their label, these wipes do not break down like toilet paper and can cause major blockages and backups. The only things safe to flush are human waste and toilet paper. Flushing anything else can lead to costly repairs. Help protect your home and our wastewater system by keeping non-flushable items, including "flushable wipes," out of your toilets, sinks, and drains.

Flushing Fire Hydrants and Sewer Mains Flushing of fire hydrants has started and will end tomorrow. Flushing of the sewer mains started today and will continue Monday through Friday, from 7 AM to 3:30 PM, for the next several weeks. Fire Hydrant Flushing: As part of routine maintenance, hydrants will be flushed to ensure proper function and clear sediment from the water lines. You may notice cloudy or discolored water during this process. While the water is safe, it may be unsettling. If you notice cloudy water, run the cold tap in your bathtub for several minutes. The larger faucet helps flush out sediment. Sewer Main Flushing: Sewer mains will also be flushed using high-pressure water (no chemicals) to maintain system performance. What to Expect: During the cleaning process, you can continue to use toilets, sinks, and other appliances. The air pressure in the sewer can create noise in the pipes and may cause water to splash out through toilets, sinks and drains. To prevent spills, it is advised to keep toilet lids closed and sink drains covered when not in use. Short-term nuisance odors may occur during sewer cleaning. Opening windows for a few minutes, run water down sink and bathtub drains, flushing toilets and pouring water into floor drains can help clear odors. Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain the quality and safety of our water and sewer systems!
