We had stopped going to this restaurant for several years because of the inept counter service for take out and the deteriorating quality of food. We recently tried it again. Once OK, second time tasty and tonight the take out food is inedible. The fried rice is saturated in grease - absolutely disgusting. We discarded the food. We won't return. Telephone ordering and pick up can be challenging to say the least due to the young and often seemingly disinterested staff. The kitchen is entirely erratic.
Service was horrible. Our waitress was the most ill-tempered, nasty woman. It was as if it took all her willpower to come over and serve us-if one could even call it that. After our menu fiasco, (where we ordered while the waitress either snapped back replies to our questions or stood like a deer in headlights) our food arrived. The food was alright, not fantastic. The breading on the lemon chicken and chicken balls was satisfyingly crispy and not at all soggy. The veg. lo mein was soupy, bland and had a weird aftertaste, as though the whole thing had been boiled in chicken stock. No seasoning at all and rather limp and uninspired. Almost no colour to any of the vegetables either. Although the dining room was practically empty, the elderly couple sitting across from us was receiving a better attitude and service from the same waitress. I don't know what we did to deserve her wrath. We were polite, quiet, and didn't ask for much. Needless to say, we didn't tip much. She was, quite frankly, a dog. If we order again, which I'm not sure we will, we'll be sure to order for delivery or take-out. They need to not only reeducate their waitstaff on manners and service, but they need to post a menu online so that people who are ordering for delivery don't need to go through these reviews just to pick out something to eat.
i've moved to kitchener, but whenever i'm in the beechwood area i always stop by to kam yin. their take out services are speedy and excellent. they don't add any MSG into their dishes so you are able to taste the natural flavours of the ingredients, something that is rare for chinese restaurants. their deep fried dishes are good too, the batter for the chicken balls isn't too oily and crisp. the dine in service leaves something to be desired, as there are a few servers who always seem to be in a bad mood, but the service for take out is great. one of my favourites!
The food was excellent....fresh and tasty. Didn't find any trouble with service, was also fast and friendly enough. Atmosphere is nothing special, purely functional decor, but when you're enjoying your food it's good enough 8)
Knowing how busy Christmas Eve is at Chinese restaurants, I placed my order the day before so it would be ready at the time specified. The order taker couldn't guarantee I would get my order at that time and I couldn't understand why. The reason? They hadn't prepared it when I arrived, and then it was put on the bottome of the pile or orders that were phoned in less than a half hour before. I waited over an hour for my order. Another lady placed her order 4 days in advance and she too waited that long. The food was also below par. Will not be returning there for takeout or sit down. If the gentleman had told me that they wouldn't prepare my order until I arrived in case I didn't show, I would have cancelled and called Christmas Eve. Extremely disappointed in the takeout service that day. Also, they had 5 very young people handling the takeout orders that day, who seemed to be extremely inadequately trained.
